Thursday Thoughts: Seeking the Lord's Counsel

I have been continuing my reading in the book of Joshua this week...slowly but surely, I know. In chapter 9, it was talking about how the Gibeonites pretended to be people from a far away country in order to get Joshua and the Isrealites to make a covenant with them. Verses 4 and 5 say, "they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy." They went to Joshua and the other men and showed them their old wineskins and moldy bread and asked to make a covenant with them. So verses 14 and 15 say, "Then the men of Isreal took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them." They found out three days later that they were not who they said they were.
I wonder if Joshua and the Isrealites had "asked counsel of the Lord" if things would have turned out differently, if they would have realized it was a bad idea to make covenant with these people.
That also makes me wonder if I am seeking the Lord's counsel as often as I should. No matter is too small for me to get on my knees and pray about, or open God's Word for guidance.
  • Prov. 3:6 says "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
  • Prov. 20:24- "A man's steps are of the Lord; How then can a man understand his own way?"
  • Psalm 32:8- "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will guide you with My eye."

I've really been trying to focus on more prayer and listening for God's direction.

Prov. 3:6 is one of my favorite verses.
