I was reading about the prophet Elijah in the book of I Kings this week. Queen Jezebel had been persecuting the prophets, and had vowed to take the life of Elijah. He traveled for forty days and forty nights to get to Horeb, the mountian of God, and was hiding in a cave there. In verse 9 it says that the word of the Lord came to him and said, "What are you doing here , Elijah?" and Elijah answered in v. 10 "I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
Verses 11 and 12 say (I love this part): "Then He said, 'Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.' And behold, the Lord pased by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice."
Doesn't that just give you chills?? It was like God was showing Elijah that He was mighty and powerful and in control of all things, yet He chose to speak to Elijah in that "still small voice" instead of through all those mighty and powerful things. What does this say about God? To me, it says that He is SO mighty, yet He uses compassion and care for His loved ones.
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when he had Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become o much better than the angels, as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they." (Hebrews 1:1-4)

I love that God whispers, and I definetly think that He still does that to us today.
So true...I think because God doesn't come out like He used to with huge displays of burning bushes, earthquakes, and moving mountains that are so obviously Him...we have to listen for the little voices, the whispers. Or even the little girls humming a church song :-)
I strive to listen to that still, small voice.
Thanks for the great thoughts!!
