Thursday Thoughts: The Wisest Man on Earth

This week I finished reading 2nd Samuel and have moved on to 1st Kings. I have been reading all about King Solomon. I found out why we always say that he was the "wisest man on earth". In chapter 3, starting in verse 9, Solomon prayed to God, "Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?"

Then verses 10-14 say, "The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Then God said to him: 'Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. and I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days."

Then in chapter 4, verses 29-30 and 34 say: "And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. Thus Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt...And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon."

This made me think of one of my favorite verses which is Psalm 37:4 that says "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart."

I believe that when we are truly delighting in the LORD, and Him alone, the things we ask for are going to be in line with the things He wants for us, and He is faithful to give that to us, and sometimes even more than what we ask for.

  • James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
  • 1 John 5:14-15: "Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him."
  • "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!" (Matthew 7:7-11)

Any thoughts? Can anyone think of any other scriptures that might go along with this?

When I reflect on the times in my life when God was not first, those seem like the dark times or times when I had troubles. This reminds me to keep my focus on God. Or, delight in Him, as you quoted. I really like that verse.
