Thursday Thoughts: Building a Cathedral

This week for my Thursday Thoughts I decided to post something that I got in an email. I don't know who wrote it, but I think it is so beautiful and very appropriate since Mother's Day was this past Sunday.

Invisible Moms

"It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?' Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible. The invisible Mom.

Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England . Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean.

My unwashed hair was pulled up in a hair clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe . I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work. No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte . I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women."

Okay, now this is me talking. Wasn't that beautiful? One verse that my mom always used to quote to me when I was younger is Ecclesiastes 9:10 that says, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might..." I am so thankful that she taught me that lesson, and just wish I had listened to her back then, too. I am also thankful to her for the sacrifices I know she made when she was "building cathedrals" out of us.

It is so comforting to know that no matter how invisible we feel at times, God sees our hard work, and He will reward us for it in the end.

  • Galations 6:9~ "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
  • I Cor. 15:58~ "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."

I love the story of the virtuous wife in Proverbs 31. I go there often when I need a little inspiration. She was certainly building a beautiful cathedral, wasn't she? I especially like the last verse that says "Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates." I don't know about you, but when I am gone, I want my works to be "praising me in the gates."

I hope this week while you're doing your daily to-do lists, that you'll realize you aren't just washing clothes, or bandaging up a hurt knee, you are building a beautiful cathedral, one carving at a time. :)

Just getting caught up...

Just posting a few pictures...

This one is from a few weekends ago. We went to Kabuki, and Isabelle got her picture taken with the waitress.
My little sister Susy, and her friend, Tabitha Joy(seriously, that is her name) came to visit this past weekend for mother's day. Here's a picture of Isabelle with Aunt Susy...
These two are from Mother's day. Ben took us to Famous Anthony's for breakfast before church.
Isabelle got to eat pancakes. :D
This is just a picture I thought was cute. This box was laying on the floor last week. (I know what you're thinking: I STILL haven't gotten rid of all my boxes?) She had fun crawling through it. Isn't that a random face she is making?

I also wanted to correct myself in this post. I posted earlier that Aric was having the lumps in his thyroid removed. I was wrong. It was actually his ENTIRE thyroid and lymph nodes, but he is home now and seems to be doing alright. You can look at thier blog for details. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. He'll be having Radioactive Iodine treatment in a few weeks and will have to be away from his family because Amber is pregnant.

I guess that is it for now!

NO FEAR

So I started reading the book of Joshua this week. No particular reason, I just wanted to study something in the Old Testament. In chapter one, I came across a really great verse. It is verse 9 that says "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." God was sending Joshua and the Isrealites to take the promised land. Can you imagine the fear that Joshua might have been feeling? He was taking over the Isrealite army and getting ready to go into battle. I get scared for much smaller reasons than that! But God COMMANDED him not to be afraid.

David said in Psalm 27:1-3 "The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident."

2 Timothy 1:7 says "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind."

I love the story of Jesus calming the sea in Matthew 8:23-27~ "Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then his disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, 'Lord, save us! We are perishing!' But He said to them, 'Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?' Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, 'Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?'"

It can be so difficult sometimes not to be fearful living in this world, with all its troubles. But itsn't it so comforting to know that we serve a Savior who can command even the seas and winds? I mean, who else can do that? No one! If He can do that, then He can take care of lil' ol' me! "Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" (Matthew 6:26)

1 John 4:18~"...perfect love casts out fear..."

Tax Rebate

We got our tax rebate today!! Woo hoo! Just like Aric and Amber, we did not get quite as much as we thought, but that's okay, it's still extra money that we weren't expecting!

Just in case you are curious, you can click here to find out the status of your rebate.

PS- please keep our friends Aric and Amber in your prayers. Aric is having the lumps in his thyroid removed today. You can look at their blog for details.

One Door Down

Step 1 of the kitchen remodel is almost finished! As I have earlier stated, there is very little cabinet or counter space in our kitchen, as you can see. So in order to fix that, we plan to close in the door that you see to the right of the cabinets. This will give us more wall space to add more cabinets.

In order to close that door in, we first had to install a new door here, in the dining room:

First, Ben took all the casing out around the window...
Then had to cut and remove all the drywall...
Here he is cutting the brick on the outside of the house. There was a lot of dust!!
Bricks partially removed.
All the bricks and the window are gone, now he's working on the framing:

Framing is gone now...BIG MESS!
New framing is up...
Door is in, new hardware is in, and drywall is up(sorry I missed a couple steps with the pictures.)
New casing is up around the door...
This is what it looks like from the outside: we still need to fix the brick, put in stairs, etc.
I will be sure to take more pictures when it is all finished!

On another note, Monday we took Isabelle outside and let her play in the grass. She loved it! Here are a few pictures...

Not much else new to share...Isabelle has a cold (or allergies or something) because her nose is running something fierce. She woke up this morning with it crusted all over her face. (sorry if that's TMI) Poor little thing...you can tell she is uncomfortable. Things are going pretty good at Ben's job, and I'm just doing my mommy thing. Nothing too exciting, other than some remodeling projects. Oh, I am thinking about doing a vegetable garden. Aren't you impressed? There is a garden space already in our yard, and one of the neighbors offered to come over and till it up for us, so I think I'm going to take him up on it and try out my green thumb. Feel free to share if you have any tips!

And here is a video of the window framing coming out...

9 months old!!

Isabelle turned 9 months old yesterday! I can't believe how big she is getting. So in honor of this occasion, here are 9 little tidbits about her that I thought I would share:

  1. She can crawl now, and she is also pulling up on things. She was even cocking one leg up today trying to climb up onto the fireplace. :D
  2. Sometimes she starts laughing just for the sake of laughing. It cracks me up.
  3. I love how she smiles and her eyes light up when her Daddy or I walk into the room. She is such a happy baby!
  4. She has 6 teeth now! And another one on the way!
  5. I love her chubby little hands and fingers and how she can pick things up by herself. She loves to feed herself. Some table foods she has tried are: bannanas, cooked carrots, peas, potatoes, green beans, and of course, Gerber puffs in a variety of flavors. :)
  6. She says "Hiiiii" and waves by scrunching up her little fingers. It just melts my heart.
  7. She LOVES to be outside, and she loves her doggy.
  8. She recognizes people and gets really excited when she sees someone she knows. She also likes to look at herself in the mirror.
  9. She brings a smile to the face of anyone who looks at her. I have been out in public and seen someone walking along with a frown on thier face, and then when they see her they light up and can't help but smile! She is such a ray of sunshine!!

Isabelle, I hope someday you will understand just how much your Mommy and Daddy love you, and how much JOY you bring to our lives and the lives of everyone around you! Happy 9 months, baby girl!!

Also, here is a video of her waving. It's so cute. (Or at least her Mommy thinks so.)

Think on These Things
So you all remember Julie's post about what influences us, right? That is kind of what inspired this whole Thursday Thoughts thing. If you haven't read it yet, you should, or if you have, go back and re-read it.
I have been thinking a lot lately about what I fill my mind with. Who I am letting influence my decisions, how I spend my time, and most importantly, my thoughts? Think of some TV shows that you watch on a regular basis. Think about who is producing those shows. The reality shows, the news shows, the dramas and the sitcoms. Who is writing the newspapers and magazine articles? In most cases, it is the WORLD! Those things that we see on television and in newspapers and magazines are not of God, they are of the world. It is bad enough that they glorify bad language, dishonesty, and premarital sex, but they also make adultery and homosexuality seem like it is glamorous. Most news programs only tell me the bad things that are happening in the world, like who got killed, raped, etc. Not anything that is "of good report." Is this what God would want me to fill my mind with? I don't think so!
Of course we cannot be completely cut off from the world, or else we would not be able to influence those who are in it for Christ. The point is, we are to be IN the world, but not OF the world. Romans 12:2 says "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
But how can we expect that to be when we are letting the world influence our thoughts and therefore our actions?
Ephesians 4:27 says "do not give place to the devil." When I fill my mind with worldly thoughts, I am actually giving a little piece of my mind to the devil. I am "giving him a place" in my mind, and I don't want him there!!
  • "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:1,2)
  • "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-think on these things." (Phil. 4:8)
So from now on, unless whatever program that's on the TV is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, or praiseworthy, I will not be watching it.
